Hobart distilleries

If you aren’t a beer nor a wine fan, go and check out the distilleries located on the outskirts of Hobart CBD. Here’s a list of distilleries that the Localista team recommend.

Nestled on the Hobart waterfront, Lark Distillery specialises in producing a variety of premium malt whiskys and spirits. They also offer a collection of Tasmanian beers and wines. They were the first Australian distillery to start making single-malt whiskys in 154 years.

Situated an hour away from Hobart CBD, in the historic village of Otalands, Callington Mill Distillery’s famous windmill facade can be easily recognised from a distance. They offer an immersive and single malt experience where you can taste five premium cask strength raw whiskies. You can even create your own unique Single Malt Whisky with a personalized 700ml bottle that’s signed by you. Learn about the history of Callington Mill through interactive self-guided distillery tours around the distillery with video and audio installations. If you’re hungry, you can head over to Callington Mill’s cellar door restaurant where they serve food locally harvested in Tasmania.

Old Kempton Distillery is an artisan distillery that’s located 40mins north of Hobart. They offer whisky, gin and liqueur tastings. There is a distiller experience that teaches you how to become a master distiller and allows you to purchase and mature your very own 20L barrel of whisky.

McHenry Distillery is a family business located in Port Arthur and is Australia’s southern-most whisky distillery. McHenry Distillery specialises in creating premium spirits such as Sloe Gin, Gin and Vodka, all available for tastings. They produce hand-made whiskys made from pure spring water. Their cellar-door is open 7 days a week for tastings or tours that you can book online. If you’d like to stay for more whisky, McHenry Distillery provides a fully self-contained, hilltop and spacious eco cabin.
